Bellville shows it's up to the challenge
Volleyball team in state tourney for first time in 5 years

Like most other volleyball teams around the state, Bellville's goal, year in and year out, is to make the state tournament and give itself a chance at taking home a championship.

But unlike most other teams, it is expected. If it doesn't happen, the players don't consider the season a success.

"It has always been drilled in our heads," senior middle blocker Kristin Chancellor said, "that you have to make it to state."

That's because the Bellville community is accustomed to the Brahmas (33-6) winning. When they make their way to San Marcos for Friday's state semifinal with Texarkana Pleasant Grove (38-4), it will be the Brahmas' 13th state tournament trip but first since 2000.

What a relief

The end of that five-year drought has the Bellville seniors — hitters Katlin Inglish and Lacie Hugo, libero Adrienne Meier, setter Christina Nevins and Chancellor — feeling like they've lifted a weight off their shoulders.

"In the '90s, that's all they did was go to state and win it," Meier said. "It feels great to get there and have a chance to get one."

Eight state titles (six from 1990-1997) can make expectations pretty high. Bellville is tied with defending state champion Monahans as the 3A school with the most titles. That tradition at times has the girls competing more with the school's past teams than the teams they actually face on the court.

"We do think about that sometimes," Chancellor said. "We're trying to live up to the tradition, but we've failed three times (as undergraduates)."

But not this time. A tough non-district schedule that consisted of top area Class 5A teams such as Katy, Spring and Cy-Fair toughened up the Brahmas as they cruised through District 20-3A play at 10-0. They blew through their first three playoff matches before meeting Barbers Hill, the 3A state runner-up last season. After beating the Eagles in four games, Bellville is ready to add the ninth state championship trophy to its case.

"That was the toughest match out of all four (of our playoff matches)," coach Susan Brewer said. "I have tons of respect for Barbers Hill. It was great to win, but right now we're feeling like we still have a lot more to prove."

Wall of fame

And what may be as big a thrill for the Brahmas as winning the title is having their team picture on a wall along with the school's other 12 state tournament squads.

"We want to be on the wall," Chancellor said. "We have a lot to live up to. Our goal when we came to this high school was to have that picture on the wall by time we graduated so we can look back on it with the other teams that made it to state."

 IN FAMILIAR SPOT

Bellville is seeking its ninth championship in 13 trips to the state tournament:

Late surge propels Bellville to 3A final
Inglish takes over as Brahmanettes top Pleasant Grove at state volleyball

SAN MARCOS - Katlin Inglish and her Bellville teammates didn't agree with the call. Neither did coach Susan Brewer. But the referees conferred and agreed that Texarkana Pleasant Grove hitter Lauren Cox's 16th kill of the match was in — not out — giving the Hawks a two-point lead in the decisive fifth game.

At that point, Inglish decided she wouldn't leave the result of the Class 3A state semifinal volleyball match in the hands of the officials. She took it upon herself to make sure the call wouldn't affect the outcome.

"After the call I just said 'OK, let's go, no matter what happens, we're fine,' " she said.

Then, as middle blocker Kristin Chancellor said, her teammates "knew (Inglish) was going to hit the heck out of the ball."

And that's what she did, accounting for three of the Brahmanettes' final six points, including match point, to complete Bellville's 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-11) win Friday at Strahan Coliseum. The victory earns Bellville a spot in the 3A state championship match today against defending state champ Monahans.

"I didn't feel like we were in trouble at that point," Brewer said. "In the huddle, the girls were very calm. That's been one of (their) strengths. They don't get real excited about calls."

Inglish terrorized the Hawks (38-5) with her hitting from the left side, pounding out a match-high 33 kills, 15 in the final two games. She hooked up frequently with Kayla Schmidt (match-high 53 assists), to provide a 1-2 punch that proved difficult for the Hawks to handle.

"We connect really good," Inglish said. "It was so much fun. There's nothing better than having that chemistry in a game like that."

And when it wasn't the Schmidt-to-Inglish combo racking up points, the junior setter looked for sophomore Precious Sanders, whose 24 kills often came at key times.

"She's always been the type that wants the ball," Brewer said. "She'll go get any ball that we put out there, and certainly that showed up in her today."

Brewer said she would have liked to use less than the five games to win, but with the school's 12th appearance in the state championship match on the horizon, she'll take it.

"I am very proud of the way my team responded to the challenge," Brewer said. "It's something that I've been able to count on them for all year."

Bellville outguns Monahans for 3A title
Written by LoneStarVolleyball special correspondent

In a wild west shootout featuring two of the state's best gunslingers - Bellville's Kaitlin Inglish and Monahans' Brittany Hughes - Bellville ultimately had more weapons than Monahans and took the 3A title away from the defending champions 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11.

Twenty-six state appearances and 18 team titles between them made the Class 3A volleyball championship a tradition-rich gathering. Nine-time champion Monahans (42-4) was defending its title against TGCA second-ranked and now nine-time champion Bellville (35-6).

“Wow, what a match. I knew these girls could do it and they believed me. This was an amazing run,” said Bellville coach Susan Brewer.

Not surprisingly the match was a heavy weight battle with the teams punching and counter punching as Bellville’s Inglish, Precious Sanders and sisters Kristin and Casey Chancellor matched kills with 2004 championship match MVP Hughes, Alison Miller, Bailey Marcum and Catherine Cutbirth.

The Brahmanettes and Loboes went after each other in a relentless “give no quarter” match that surely will be one for the ages.

Inglish was named championship game Most Valuable Player after an impressive 27 kills with four service aces and 15 digs. Precious sanders added 15 kills while Kristin Chancellor added nine kills and sister Casey Chancellor finished with six kills.

Bellville middle blocker Gene Taylor had just five kills and two blocks, but they accounted for three key points in game five.  Bellville setter Kayla Schmidt had 58 assists.

Game five came down to Bellville jumping ahead 7-3 thanks to two aces by Christina Nevins and kills by Gene Taylor and Kaitlin Inglish.  Monahans closed on two kills each by Miller and Hughes and pulled within two points, trailing 11-9 after a Bellville attack error.

A kill by Sanders then an ace by Kristin chancellor followed by a combination block by Sanders and Taylor moved Bellville within reach of the championship.  Bellville committed an attack error and a net violation but won the game, match and state championship on an overpass kill by Taylor.

Hughes had an amazing match with 25 kills, two aces and 13 digs to lead the Loboes.  Alison Miller had 11 kills and Catherine Cutbirth six kills for the Loboes who got 41 assists by Candace Swarb.

Game one started with a rush as Bellville led 3-0, 8-4 and 16-14 only to watch as Monahans matched point for point and the teams were tied at 17-17.

Hughes smacked her sixth kill of the game for an 18-17 lead and Bailey Marcum followed with an ace for a 19-17 lead.  Inglish notched kill number four followed by a Monahans attack error then Inglish got kill number five,  took the service line and notched an ace to tie game one at 20-20 and force a Monahans timeout.

Inglish slammed another service ace then Sanders ripped a cross court kill for a 22-20 Bellville lead but the next Inglish serve was long.  Kristin Chancellor went cross court for point 23 for Bellville and Monahans committed an attack error as Bellville lead 24-21 with Monahans coach Patty Dominguez taking her second timeout.

Bellville was tagged for a net violation and Alison Miller had a kill off a block to draw the Loboes within a point at 24-23 and Bellville coach Susan Brewer called a Brahmanettes timeout.

Bellville went to Casey Chancellor on the left side on game point, Chancellor’s attack was blocked and rolled down the net and out of bounds giving the
Brahmanettes the point and game at 25-23.

The second game was just a continuation as Inglish and Hughes exchanged kills and aces with a little help from their friends and the teams were even at 7-7.  Monahans pulled ahead as Bailey Marcum ripped a pair of aces to give the Loboes an 11-8 lead.

Monahans added a point on a block by  Miller to go ahead 12-9 and Bellville committed an antenna violation for a 13-9 lead.  Miller had another block for a 14-9 lead and Bellville called a timeout.

Bellville committed a pair of errors but got another Casey Chancellor kill but Monahans answered with a pair of Hughes kills, one by Bailey Marcum and the Loboes led 19-13.  Inglish went far side for point 14 and Monahans hit long as Bellville trialed 19-15 and Monahans called timeout.

Caitlin Cutbirth got a kill and Miller had a block for Monahans but Catie smith dumped a set for a Bellville point.  Bellville was then called in the net and Marcum had a block for a 23-16 Monahans lead and second Bellville timeout.

Precious Sanders had two kills and an error for a 24-18 Monahans led then Kristin Chancellor served an ace for a 24-19 game but Marcum went from left side to
far side on a cross court shot that won the game and tied the match.

Not surprisingly, game three was another rendition of the same verse as the teams were tied at 7-7, again. Catherine Cutbirth joined Miller and Hughes slamming down kills for the Loboes while Inglish and Kristin Chancellor did the majority of the early work for the Brahmanettes as the teams were tied again at 11-11.

Kills by Hughes and Inglish left it at 12-12, while another Hughes kill was matched by Chancellor for a 13-13 tie.

Watch out, here came the high flying Hughes for yet another kill that sent her to serve and Miller got an overpass kill. But Sanders for Bellville caught the
middle for a kill as the Brahmanettes went back to Sanders for the tying kill shot at 15-15.

Sanders went down the middle for a 16-15 Bellville lead forcing a Monahans timeout.  Miller came out of the timeout to tie the match for the Loboes at 16-16 but Bellville went up on two more kills by Sanders to give the Brahmanettes a 19-17 lead.  A Loboes kill by Miller was offset by Inglish as Bellville led 20-18.

Hughes rotated to the front and slammed a kill followed by a block from setter Candace Swarb to tie the game at 20-20.  Inglish ripped a shot that was
blocked out of bounds by Hughes for a Bellville 21-20 lead but Hughes then blocked Inglish for tying point at 21-21 with Bellville calling a timeout.

Hughes went to the corner for a go ahead kill at 22-21 and Bellville hit long for a 23-21 lead and second Bellville timeout. Inglish cut a cross shot for a kill cutting the lead to 23-22, Monahans.  In a long, long rally, Hughes hit a cut shot off her left should just inside the left sideline for a 24-22 lead and Miller got a block at the net for game point at 25-22.

Facing elimination, the Brahmanettes jumped out to an 8-4 lead in game and stretched the lad to 11-5 forcing a Monahans timeout as the lady Loboes ran into a cold spell with four attack errors.   Monahans scored three times on a pair of Bellville errors an ace by Dina Ortiz to pull within 11-8 but a block by Casey Chancellor brought the serve back to Bellville.  The Brahmanettes immediately gave the ball back on an attack error.  On came Inglish together with a Loboes error and a missed serve by Bellville the score was 14-10 Bellville.

Bethany Willmon aced Bellville but Inglish ripped a kill and Hughes had answering shot for a 15-12 Bellville lead. Inglish went line for a kill and 16-12 Bellville lead.  Miller of Monahans had a tip kill followed by a Bellville return error.  Sanders crushed a kill for Bellville but was then blocked by Miller for a 17-15 Brahmanettes lead.

Monahans served into the net but miller again came up with a big kill. Loboes Dina Ortiz aced Bellville but Sanders notched another kill for a 19-17 Bellville lead.  Inglish sailed a kill just long but the following serve was into the net leaving Bellville up two at 20-18.  Monahans went to Hughes on the left side and she thundered a kill down the line and Bellville followed with a net violation for a tie at 20-20 and Bellville timeout.

Facing off, Inglish and Hughes each had a kill then Inglish hit long but followed with a kill shot down the line to tie the game at 22-22 with both Inglish and Hughes moving to their back rows.

Sanders got a kill for a 232-22 Bellville lead and Monahans called timeout.  Monahans hit into the net so Bellville served game point but had a hitting error for a change of serves but Bellville’s Kristin Chancellor hit inside the back line for game point forcing a deciding game five.
